VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team defeated North Carolina Wesleyan University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-20), Wednesday evening on Senior Night. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 22-7 on the year while the Battling Bishops slide to 10-21.
The Marlin offense was rolling the first two sets as they finished with attack percentages above .360 both times. In the third, the home side tailed off a little but still was in command the entire stanza. Offensively, Amber Matalus led the squad with 11 kills but was followed closely by Greta Coss and Lauren Topper who notched 10 and 9, respectively. Aiding in the offense was Haley Sutton who finished with 17 assists and Meghan Wood who had 16.
On the defensive side of things, the Marlins were smothering as they held NCWC to a -.027 attack percentage. That was helped by a big block put up by Sydney Collins, who racked up four assists to go along with a solo. Partnering her on most of those double blocks was Coss, who also had four.
Volleyball will return to action again at 4:40 p.m. on Friday as the team takes on Averett University in the opening game of the Christopher Newport Tournament played in Newport News, Va.
