VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team completed its clean sweep of the weekend as it picked up a pair of wins on Saturday in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. The Marlins swept both of its opponents in straight sets, dropping Wesley College and Randolph. With the wins, the Marlins improve to 4-0 on the year.
GAME 1: VWU – 3 WES – 0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-18)
The Marlins rarely played from behind on the day as the Marlins found themselves up early in every set. A Meghan Wood seven-serve run helped lead them to victory in the opening set a Haley Sutton six-serve run did damage in the second set. Offensively, Amber Matalus and Greta Coss both churned out solid performances as each of them ended with 10 kills.
Alyssa Taylor helped stoke the defensive side of things as she racked up 21 digs from the libero position.
GAME 2: VWU – 3 RAND – 0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-17)
Game two followed suit with game one as the Marlins found themselves in the lead early. It was Elizabeth Britton's turn to ramp up the serving as she went on a five-serve track to start the opening set. In game two, things were a bit tighter towards the end as the team was down 20-18 to the Wildcats late. Matalus then rallied six-straight serves to make it 24-20, which were helped by a pair of Britton kills. In set three, the Marlins lost the first pint but collected the next two and never gave up the lead from there.
Sutton showed no signs of fright as the freshmen racked up 21 assists. Britton led the squad in kills as she finished with 11. At the net, Sydney Collins, Kathryn Yeager and Lauren Topper all finished with a pair of blocks.
Volleyball returns to action again on Friday as the team squares off against St. Vincent and Galluadet on the road.
