Career-Highs Propel Marlin to Opening Day Victories

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team captured a pair of victories as it opened up its 2019 season with the Marlin Invite on Friday. The squad needed all five sets to take down Pitt-Bradford before defeating St. Mary's College (Md.) in straight sets in the day's second match.

MATCH 1: VWU - 3 PB – 1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-12, 20-25, 15-7)

It was a battle right from the get go as the Marlins narrowly escaped the first set with a victory. Down 23-18, Sarah Brush knocked off seven-straight serves to help propel the team to victory. Of those final seven points, four came off Elizabeth Britton kills. The Panther came back to steal set two, but the momentum didn't last as the team's attack percentage of .414 helped the Marlins trounce their opponent in set three. Pitt-Bradford wouldn't let up though, forcing a fifth set. The beginning of the fifth played close to start but the Marlins attack eventually wore on the Panthers earning them a season-opening victory.

Lauren Topper had a career day as her 21 kills not only led the team but also set a new career high. Amber Matalus and Elizabeth Britton also reached the double-digit kill mark as they tallied 16 and 13 respectively.

Meghan Wood handled most of the setting duties as she racked up a career-high 40 assists. On the backline, Alyssa Taylor and Elizabeth Britton both set career-highs in digs with 30 and 19, respectively.

MATCH 2: VWU – 3 SMC – 0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-10)

The Marlins used match one's momentum to propel them to an easy victory in their second contest. The team used an attack percentage of .375 to drive home another victory. Topper once again led the squad as she racked up 12 kills. Closely behind her was transfer-student Greta Coss who notched six.

Wood once again led the team in assists, reaching 24 to go along with a pair of service aces.

The Marlins return to action again on Saturday with another pair of matches. The team squares off against Wesley College at 10 a.m. before taking on ODAC-foe Randolph at 12 p.m.
