VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team dropped its non-conference bout, 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18), with Southern Virginia University Tuesday evening in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the result, the Marlins move to 7-4 on the season while the Knights improve to 8-3.
After a tough opening set, the Marlins came out firing in the second stanza. The team took an early eight-point lead and never allowed the Knights to gain any kind of lead. The competitiveness spilled into the third set, with the marlins falling behind early but able to crawl back to a late tie. The effort wasn't enough though as SVU clinched the third and fourth sets.
Despite the loss, the Marlins did a terrific job posting the bloc, accruing a season-high 20 block assists on the day. Five different players registered a BA, including seven from Amber Matalus and five from Lauren Topper.
On the back line, Sarah Brush collected 10 digs on the night, including a few impressive ones that she had her reaching full extension.
It's a short turn around for the volleyball team as it heads out on Wednesday to Salisbury University for a 7 p.m. match with the Seagulls
