Volleyball Drops Three-Set Match to Yellow Jackets
ASHLAND, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team faced the only team with an unbeaten mark in ODAC play on Tuesday, falling to Randolph-Macon in three sets 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 in VWU's regular-season ODAC finale.
The best chance for the Marlins to squeak out a set victory came in the first set, despite trailing 20-12. The Marlins went on a 6-0 run to rally back into the match. Amber Matalus started the run with a kill. A ball-handling error made it 20-14. Ashley Bologna then served an ace to cut the lead to 20-15. An attack error and kills from Doneisha Hall and Matalus cut it to a two-point deficit.
Randolph-Macon was forced to take a timeout to regroup and the move worked as R-MC scored the next three points to go out front again 23-18. The Marlins would get within three points, but the Yellow Jackets would not allow the guests any closer.
The second set was all Randolph-Macon as the Marlins were only able to post back-to-back points on two occasions, with neither spurt being more than two points. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets put together four runs of at least four points, with two being at least six-straight points.
The Yellow Jackets led the duration of the third set, looking to put the match away before the Marlins rallied at 23-12. Virginia Wesleyan scored three straight points, on an attack error and two Kristina Scott kills to make it 23-15.
Randolph-Macon sided out before the Marlins scored two more to make it 24-17. A service error ended the Marlin chance for the comeback.
Miranda Hall had 11 kills for Randolph-Macon (19-4/11-0) as Erin Quinn led the way with 15 assists to go with 16 digs from Rebecca McGilvery.
Virginia Wesleyan (16-9/8-3) travels to St. Mary's (Md.) on Thursday at 7 p.m. for a non-conference contest.
