Volleyball Opens Buttermaker Tourney with Pair of Wins
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team opened the Buttermaker Tournament on Friday with a pair of four-set victories over Neumann and Cabrini.
3-1 Victory over Neumann (25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23)
The Marlins won the first set in by a nine-point margin, but the final three sets went down to the wire resulting in 25-23 finals.
Virginia Wesleyan did a good job at the net, collecting 43 kills in the match. The Marlin defensive effort forced the Neumann attackers into 28 errors.
Mel Malseed led Neumann (1-5) with 12 kills on a .297 hitting percentage. Rachel Cray tallied 31 assists as three different NU players registered at least 20 digs.
3-1 Victory over Cabrini (26-24, 25-18, 19-25, 25-20)
The Marlins outlasted Cabrini in the first set, gaining the momentum needed to down the Cavaliers in four sets.
Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of eight Cabrini service errors to help put the Cavs away. The Marlins also benefited from 38 kills and 14 blocks.
Morgan Collito led Cabrini (3-3) with 12 kills while Olivi Blankenbiller posted 33 assists and Ashley Shannon contributed 25 digs.
Doneisha Hall paced the Marlins with 10 kills as Pierson registered 22 assists and Mackley tallied 26 digs.
Virginia Wesleyan (5-2) faces Stevenson (7-0) at noon and Muhlenberg (6-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday to conclude play in the Buttermaker Tournament.
