Win Streak at Six as Marlins Sweep Opening Day at GU
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team won both opening day matches at Gallaudet University's Worthington Classic on Friday.
The win extends the Marlins' win streak to six matches with two more matches left to play on Saturday in the Classic.
Marlins vs. FDU-Florham - Won (25-16, 26-24, 25-23)
VWC downed FDU-Florham in three sets to start the tournament. The Marlins previously lost to the Devils in four sets in the Virginia Wesleyan College Tournament on September 5.
Tiffany Barrett continued to post high hitting percentages, finishing with 14 kills on a .316 percentage, while tying for the team lead with 16 digs. Emilee Pierson had 22 assists while Marin Crowder added 16 digs for the Marlins.
Lauren Harris had 14 kills for FDU-Florham (17-5) while Kristi Wong added 26 assists to go along with 18 digs from Alex Mueller.
Marlins vs. Gallaudet - Won (25-19, 25-20, 25-22)
Virginia Wesleyan positioned itself well heading into the final day of the tournament with a three-set victory of the host Bison.
The Marlins trailed 19-16 in the first set before scoring the final nine points to take the first. Kristina Scott led the charge with two kills in the nine-point surge.
Gallaudet attempted a comeback in the third, leading 15-11, but the Marlins outscored the Bison 7-1 to assume an 18-16 lead that would last the duration.
Virginia Wesleyan will play Illinois Tech at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. The Marlins will then play at 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. depending on pool standings.
