Marlins Continue to Roll in ODAC Play, Down Lynchburg in Four
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team dropped the first set Tuesday evening before rolling through the final three in a 20-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory.
Lynchburg has always been a tough place for road teams to play and the home team proved it in the first game, winning the final six points after trailing 20-19 against the Marlins.
The upset bid would not last as the Marlins coasted to a second set win after holding the Lynchburg attack to a -.233 hitting percentage. Additional Hornet errors gave momentum over to VWC. Lynchburg spotted Virginia Wesleyan its first six points of the game on errors as VWC took a 6-1 lead.
Lynchburg fought back to tie the contest at eight, but the Marlins produced a 6-0 run to go up 14-8. Kirstin Sessoms served up two aces during the run while VWC led the remainder of the game.
After having full control of the third set, the fourth looked early as if LC might force a fifth, and deciding, set. Virginia Wesleyan trailed 4-1, but scored 16 of the next 19 points to go up 17-7. Tiffany Barrett had four kills while Rosalind Ludovici added three in the scoring surge.
Barrett led the Marlins with 16 kills while hitting .333 on the evening to go along with 10 digs and two blocks. Emilee Pierson contributed 21 assists and 12 digs as Marin Crowder led the Marlins with 16 digs. Hannah Weber was instrumental in the serve game with a career-best four aces.
