Marlins Sweep Matches on Opening Day of Tourney
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team got off to a hot start at its host tournament on Friday, defeating Rivier University 3-1 before downing Misericordia University 3-0.
The Marlins battled every game with Rivier, taking the first game 25-22 before dropping the second 24-26 and winning the third 26-24. The fourth game was not as close thanks to a .414 hitting percentage by the Marlins. Tiffany Barrett led Virginia Wesleyan with 18 kills and a .310 hitting mark while adding 13 digs, one off the team high.
Lauren Silverman had 15 kills for Rivier (0-1) in the loss.
The Marlins turned around and immediately faced Misericordia, defeating the Cougars 25-17, 25-18, 25-23.
The first two games looked to be all Virginia Wesleyan as the Marlins committed just seven attack errors en route to a 2-0 set lead. The third set was tied at 17, but multiple Cougar errors and kills from five different Marlins finished off the victory.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-1) hosts Wartburg College (2-0) Saturday at 10 a.m. before playing FDU-Florham (1-1) at 2 p.m.
