GUILFORD, N.C. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team swept Guilford, 9-0, on the road Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Marlins improve to 7-4 on the season and go to 3-2 in conference play.
It was dominant play from start to finish for the Marlins, starting with some solid doubles action. Audrey Bally and Katie Staman teamed up to win first doubles by a score of 8-1. Christina Zalameda and Lyric Hinton would match that at second doubles with another 8-1 victory. Aubree Johnson and Taylor Witherspoon would complete the doubles sweep with a 8-0 win.
Momentum rolled into singles play beginning with Zalameda, who earned a win at first by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Bally and Staman followed that with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins at second and third, respectively. Hinton and Tatum O'Brien turned a pair of nice wins at fifth and sixth as each beat their counterparts by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Amanda Steggemen rounded out the victories as she defeated her Quaker foe by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Women's tennis returns to action again at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as the team heads to Randolph-Macon for another conference battle.
