Marlins Earn Pair of ODAC Wins

Hollins, VA – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team picked up a pair of ODAC wins on Sunday at Hollins University.  After a short delay due to damp courts the Marlins defeated host Hollins 9-0 in the first of a two match double header. 

In doubles action, the Marlin's #1 team of Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) and Audrey Bally (Nice, France) won 8-1 over Sarah Snoddy and Valerie Sargeant.  At #2, freshman Christine Zalameda (Poquoson, VA) and junior transfer Lyric Hinton (Chesterfield, VA) defeated Kateri Johnson and Alexis Moring 8-1.  At #3 the Marlin's Taylor Witherspoon and Aubree Johnson won their match 8-0 over Anna Holland and Elizabeth Eubank. 

In singles, the Marlins scattered only 4 games collectively.  At #1 Zalameda defeated Johnson 6-0, 6-0.  Also winning 6-0, 6-0 was Lyric Hinton at #4.  The Marlins captured #2, #3, #5 and #6 all with the score of  6-1, 6-0.  Winning in those spots respectively for the Marlins was Audrey Bally, Katie Staman, Taitum O'Brien and Amanda Stegmann. 

In the afternoon, the Marlins squared off against Ferrum for the time since they joined the ODAC.  The match was played to decision with the Marlins coming out on top in the inaugural contest 5-0. 

In doubles, the #2 team of Zalameda and Hinton made quick work winning 8-1 over Dixon and Thomson.  Soon thereafter the Marlins went up 2-0 behind an 8-3 decision when Johnson and Witherspoon took down Scott and Zizzi.  After an hour long battle at #1 doubles Bally and Staman outlasted Scott and Murray-Burns 8-6. 

With the Marlins up 3-0 and playing to decision VWU only needed two singles wins to secure the match.  Making fast work of their opponents for the Marlins was #2 Audrey Bally and #3 Katie Staman, each winning 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.

With the win the Marlins improved to 2-2 in the ODAC and 3-2 overall.  Next up for VWU will be their annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, SC where they will play 6 matches plus a stop by Guilford on their way back to campus for an ODAC showdown with the Quakers.
