LYNCHBURG, Va. - A Reina Araujo goal in the opening moments of overtime secured the 2-1 victory for the Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team over Lynchburg Saturday afternoon on the road. With the result, the Marlins improve to 11-3-3 on the year and end the regular season with an ODAC record of 7-2-1.
With the year's record, the Marlins have earned the three seed in the upcoming ODAC Championship and will host #6 Shenandoah on Wednesday in the opening round.
With things locked at 1-1, the Marlins and Lynchburg headed to an overtime period. Not much of that period was needed though as leading-goal scorer Araujo found the back of the net just over one minute in. The play began as Meinhardt slotted a thru ball into the box for Anna Pedicone. Pedicone one timed it but her shot was stopped. The carum though, fell directly to Aruajo who tucked it into the goal for the win.
Mia Meinhardt was responsible for the other goal, coming midway through the second half. On a Kennedi Anders corner, the ball eventually found its way onto the foot of Meinhardt. The junior then rockets it far post to put the Marlins up 1-0.
Amruta Karkare got the start in goal for the Marlins, making one save on the day.
