VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team played Roanoke to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at the Trinder Center. With the result, the Marlins are now 2-2-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in conference play. Roanoke improves to 1-2-3 (0-0-1 ODAC).
The Maroons were the first to get on the board, sending a floating ball in the 15th minute that found the back of the net. Reina Araujo would nearly put the Marlins back even with them though as she clanged one off the crossbar in the final minute of the half.
In the second stanza, the marlins were able to knot it back up courtesy of Kennedi Anders. Earning a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box, the freshman ripped a shot that the keeper initially saved but the inertia of the ball pushed it beyond the goal line. The game would remain tied until the final whistle of regulation.
Roanoke got the first opportunity of the extra period, as a Maroon player was played into a one-on-one with Tristan Roberts. Roberts knocked away her shot but a second shot with the goal line abandoned looked as though it was destined to go in. Anders then showed up out of nowhere to sweep it off the line and out of harm's way.
Roberts payed the entire game for VWU, stopping two Maroon shots.
Women's soccer returns to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team travels to Randolph for another ODAC matchup.
