VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 24 Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team (1-0) captured its first win in their season opener over The College of St. Benedict by a final score of 1-0. The Bennies fall to 0-1 on the young season.
After a three hour weather delay, the two sides lined up on the field at the Trinder Center to get the contest started. The teams played a back and forth half but both squads remained scoreless at the break.
The Marlins broke through early in the second half though courtesy of sophomore Anna Pedicone. The reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year broke free and fired a shot that landed in the back of the net. That was all the Marlins needed as solid defensive play staved off any comeback.
In her first career start in goal, sophomore Tristen Roberts made two saves to secure her first career shutout.
VWU's defense held strong all night as the Bennies were only able to get off 5 shots, while the Marlin offense fired off a total of 14. The Bennies best chance of the night came off a shot from 30 yards out that just sailed north of the crossbar.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action tomorrow against No. 9 Wisconsin La-Cosse for a scheduled kickoff at 6pm. Check back at vwuathletics.com for updates as there is weather expected in the area.
