VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team took down Ferrum, 21-4, Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 8-8 on the year and and 4-5 in conference play. Ferrum falls to 4-12 on the season (1-8 ODAC).
It was an offensive explosion from the Marlins right out of the gate as they netted six goals over the first 10 minutes. The Panthers broke up the scoring run with a single goal at the 19:10 mark, but VWU piled in another four before Ferrum could strike again. At the halftime whistle, the Marlins would take a 15-3 lead into the locker room, including four on the free position.
Much like the first half, the Marlins demonstrated a dominant display throughout the second. The team outscored Ferrum 6-1, leading to the team's eighth victory of the year.
Ten different Marlins registered a point on the day, with Tori Manahan's six leading the way. Following closely behind her was Renee Burt who chimed in with five of her own. Adding to the goal tally was Alyssa Bernal and Ashley Campos, who both finished with two, and Jordan Callahan, Marie Lerch, Kayla Gush, Liza Holford, Abby Shope and Olivia Serbati who all came away with one.
Defense played a major role in the win as well, as the Marlins allowed the Panthers to complete the clear eight of their 19 attempts. The team dominated 50-50 balls, coming away with 22 compared to Ferrum's 11. Holford led the squad with four groundballs while Callahan ended with three.
Women's lacrosse has locked up the sixth seed in the upcoming ODAC Championship and will travel to Roanoke for a matchup with the third-seeded Hornets. That game will take place on Wednesday.
