Women's Lacrosse Battles Tough In Senior Day Defeat

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell, 13-11, to Roanoke Saturday afternoon on Birdsong Field. With the loss the team moves to 7-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Roanoke improves to 8-6 on the season (3-4 ODAC).

After allowing a Maroon goal in the first minute, the Marlins took advantage of a man-up opportunity as Avery Frangelli netted one to even the score back up. Roanoke would regain their advantage though, scoring the game's next too goals. From then on it would be a majority of VWU offense as it dumped in five unanswered and six total to end the half with a 7-5 lead.

In the second, the teams played a back-and-forth battle with Virginia Wesleyan pulling out to small leads and Roanoke reeling them back in. The Maroons eventually tcuked away their game-winning goals with just under two minutes left as they took advantage of two man-up possessions.

Six Marlins finished the day with a goal, including four from Ashley Campos. Renee Burt and Megan Shallock each came with a pair as well, with the final three goals stemming from Frangelli, Liza Holford and Tori Manahan.

Rachel Fuller did well to distribute the ball as she came away with two assists on the day as did Holford.

Jordan Moilanen played the entire game in gaol for the Marlins, racking up 11 saves.

Women's lacrosse will return to action at 5 p.m. on Thursday as the team hosts Lynchburg at home.
