VIRGINIA BEACH -- There wasn't much to wonder about in Monday's women's lacrosse game after Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins scored nine goals in the first 17 minutes of competition against Hilbert College's Hawks.
VWC proceeded to post a 13-0 lead by halftime and employed a passing game through most of the second half before claiming a 19-0 non-conference victory on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
Twelve Marlins (3-1) scored at least one goal each, led by sophomore Simon Taylor (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and rookie Megan Schallock (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) with three each. Candace Carey (Charlottesville/Albemarle), Becca Winslow (Nokesville/Brentsville) and Amari Agee (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) added two apiece.
Aggressive defensive play by the Marlins bothered the Hawks from start to finish. Hilbert turned the ball over 21 times and won only two draw controls in each half.
Senior Carla Williams (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) produced a career-high six draw control wins, Schallock added four, and Carey finished with three. Ashley Winslow (Nokesville/Brentsville) led the Marlins with seven ground balls and her sister Becca picked up five.
Meghan Stewart (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) recorded eight saves for the Hawks (0-2).
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, March 11, at 4 p.m. at Christopher Newport University. It will be part of a doubleheader that includes the VWC men facing CNU on the Captains' field at 7 p.m.
