Atkinson's Late Three Propels Women's Basketball to Win

LYNCHBURG, Va. - It was a Bianca Atkinson 3-pointer in with just eight seconds left that helped propel the Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team to a 59-58 win over Randolph on the road Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Marlins improve to 2-5 in the season and 1-1 in conference play.

Down by two points with just 16 seconds to play, the Marlins forced the WildCats to take a timeout as they advanced up the court. On the ensuing inbounds, stingy defense led to an offensive foul thus putting the ball in the hands of VWU. Coach Liz Hudy called her own timeout to draw up a play. The ball was inbounded and found its way to Atkinson on the arc. The freshman heaved up a shot that splashed home, giving the visiting squad the one-point lead. The Marlins were then able to lock down on defense on Randolph's next possession, helping complete the fourth-quarter comeback.

Randolph opened up with the lead in the opening quarter, but a 13-3 run by the Marlins helped corral the WildCats back in. Tied 17-17 after the first 10 minutes, the Marlins would go into the half trailing by six.

The third proved to be a back-and-forth shoot out, with the Marlins still trailing going into the fourth. It was the defense that shined in the final stanza as the team held their opponents to just six points and only two made field goals.

Sabrina Jones dominated on both sides of the ball as the junior cashed in a team-high 21 points, marking the second time in her career to hit the 20-point mark. She would also be just one board shy of a double-double as she hauled in nine rebounds.

Also chipping in on the offense was Jessica Jennings who had 13 points and Mak McSweeney who finished up with 11.

The Marlins did well to distribute the ball as well as four different players finished with multiple dimes.

Women's basketball returns to the court at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the Marlins host Bridgewater for their first home game in nearly a month.
