NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team dropped its season opener, 77-52, to Christopher Newport University Sunday afternoon on the road. With the result, the Marlins move to 1-0 on the season while the Captains improve to 1-0.
It was a tough start for the Marlins as the Captains took an early 10-3 lead and never looked back. Despite the loss, Jayla Harris picked up right where she left off last season as she topped all players with 18 points. Pitching in was Sierra Coleman, who a career-high 11 points from off the bench.
Women's basketball will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the squad squares off against Salisbury University on the road.
