Marlins Drop 73-57 Contest to Guilford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Wesleyan College women's basketball team led just once Saturday, falling to Guilford College 73-57 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
The Marlins scored the first point of the game on a Raya Berkley free throw, but Guilford scored the next four on a pair of Lauren Ramsey layups to go up 4-1.
Virginia Wesleyan kept the contest close through the first, trailing just 16-15 after an Amanda Gerni 3-pointer at the 8:09 mark. Guilford answered with a 6-0 run over the next 2:30 to go up 22-15.
The Marlins cut it to five points in the second quarter, but could get no closer before intermission.
Guilford took advantage of a 58.8% shooting effort in the third quarter to pull away, connecting for 60% from the field in the fourth to go up by as many as 24 points.
The Marlins cut the final margin to just 16 points as Gerni scored nine of the final 11 points on three shots from long range.
Guilford held a 44-31 edge in rebounding. The Marlins shot 34.8% from 3-point range, limiting the Quakers to just 12.5% from distance.
Ramsey finished with 20 points and eight assists for Guilford (19-3/12-2) as Heaven Walters added 13 points. Anais Weather posted a balanced line of eight points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Virginia Wesleyan (12-11/7-7) travels to Bridgewater College (13-10/6-8) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ODAC start.
Virginia Wesleyan is 26-34 all-time against Guilford, losing four straight in the series… The Marlins are 2-3 when Gerni is the leading scorer… Virginia Wesleyan has lost five of its last six games… The Marlins are currently tied for fifth in the ODAC standings, just one game ahead of ninth place with two games to play… Seeds five through eight will host first round ODAC tournament contests.
