SALEM, Va. - The top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University softball team shut out #8 Shenandoah, 7-0, in the opening round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship Friday evening at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va. With the win, the Marlins improve to 35-3 on the season while Shenandoah goes to 18-22. The victory also propels the Marlins into the winner's bracket where they will take on #4 Randolph-Macon at 1:30 p.m.
Scoring opened in the second as Kaylah Duplain led off with a single and proceeded to steal second. A Jessica Lindsay sacrifice bunt pushed the junior to third and Weddle brought her home with a single.
After a scoreless third, the Marlins tacked on two more in the fourth. Duplain once again led off with a single and made it to second as Weddle reached on an error. One batter later, a Madison Glaubke single would bring both of those runners across the plate. Two more were then added in the fifth. Sinnett and Katelyn Biando led off with back-to-back doubles to plate the first run of the side and later, Weddle would be walked with the bases loaded to make it 5-0.
The final two Marlin runs came by way of Sinnett, who jacked a two run triple in the bottom of the sixth.
Hanna Hull did a majority of the work from the circle, tossing out 12 batters over her 5.0 innings pitched. Carla Hall came in to close the last two frames and, combined, the two would only allow a pair of hits.
