ASHLAND, Va. – The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team split its doubleheader with No. 24 Randolph-Macon Wednesday afternoon on the road. Virginia Wesleyan took game one by of a score of 1-0 before falling to the Yellow Jackets 5-1 in game two. With the result, the Marlins move to 16-1 on the season and go to 3-1 in conference action. Randolph-Macon goes to 11-4 on the year (1-1 ODAC).

GAME 1: VWU – 1  R-MC – 0

This game was decided on a single hit which came from Kaylah Duplain in the top of the third. Leading off the frame, the junior belted one over the left field fence, giving the Marlins the lead. Solid defense, including an impressive diving catch by Beth Ford negated any chance of a Yellow Jacket comeback.

Hanna Hull got the start in the circle for the Marlins, going a full 7.0 innings to pick up her 11th win of the season (11-0). The Chesterfield, Va. native fanned nine batters on the day while allowing just three hits.

GAME 2: R-MC – 5  VWU – 1

The Marlins found themselves in a hole early as the Yellow Jackets plated two runs in the bottom of the first. The deficit was cut down to one in the third though. Ford got things going with a one out single and proceeded to steal second. She would reach home two batters later as Jessica Goldyn singled through the right side.

Offense stalled for the Marlins though and Macon capitalized on a couple of Marlin errors, handing the top team of the country their first loss of the season.

Carla Hall (5-1) pitched all 6.0 innings for the Marlins, only allowing a single earned run.

Softball will return to action again at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts Bridgewater for another ODAC doubleheader.
