Softball Sinks Gettysburg, 9-2, in First Game of the Regionals

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team defeated Gettysburg College, 9-2, in the first game of the NCAA Regional Round Friday afternoon in Newport News, Va. With the win the Marlins move to 46-2 on the year and will now square off against Christopher Newport University in the second game of the NCAA Regional Round. That game will once again take place on the campus of CNU and first pitch will be thrown at 1 p.m.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings, but the Bullets changed that with a single run in the top of the third. The Marlins remained unfazed though and it showed through the bats in the bottom of the frame. Beth Ford and Kiersten Richardson led the side off with back-to-back runs. Madison Glaubke then juiced the bases, with a bunt single. That brought up senior Cassetty Howerin, who took a ball for a ride to the centerfield fence, clearing the bases on a stand up double.

Up 3-1, with no outs and a runner on second, Katelyn Biando mimicked Howerin with an RBI double to the same spot. The Marlins would put a fifth run on with an RBI single by Amy Large before closing out the inning.

The Marlins would continue to pile in runs the following inning, as Howerin, Biando and Large all picked up RBI singles.

Gettysburg would get one back with a solo shot in the fifth, but Glaubke combatted that with a solo shot of her own in the sixth.

Hanna Hull got the win in the circle for the Marlins, striking out nine and only allowing one hit through 4.0 innings. Carla Hall would relieve her in the fifth and toss two before Alana Peters came in to finish the contest.

Softball returns to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow as it takes on Christopher Newport University, who won its Regional match up with Messiah College.
