Win Streak Moves to 18-Straight as Softball Takes Two From Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. - The #1 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team took two games from Salisbury University Saturday afternoon on the road. The squad dropped the Seagulls, 8-2, in game one before shutting them out, 8-0, n the second contest. With the wins, the Marlins remain perfect at 18-0 on the year while Salisbury moves to 11-8.


GAME 1: VWU - 8 SU - 2

The Marlins got out to a quick start, putting two on the board in the opening frame. Amy Large scored Madison Glaubke with a single up the middle and Jessica Lindsay scored Large two batters later with a single to center. The Marlins doubled up in the next inning after a few Seagull errors allowed Julia Sinnett and Kiersten Richardson to reach home.

After Salisbury put up one in the bottom of the third, VWU answered, plating three in the fourth. Beth Ford got the first run, scoring on a wild pitch and Cassetty Howerin had a two-run shot over the fence later in the inning. Maria Weddle would also bring home an insurance run on a groundout in the seventh.

Hanna Hull added another win to her resume, gong 5.0 innings and striking out three. She would be relieved by Carla Hall, who finished out the game.


GAME 2: VWU - 8 SU - 0 (6 Inn.)

It was a slower start to this tilt as the Marlins finally broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the third. Howerin sent a sacrifice fly into right field which allowed Richardson to score. In the following stanza, a Kerrigan Simpson homer would plate two, increasing the lead to 3-0.

The final five Marlin runs came in the sixth inning beginning with Howerin being walked in. Katelyn Biando would follow that walk-in with a single that scored Julie Fassl from third. Following that at-bat, Amanda Archer pinch hit for a single that would score Daja Burgee. The final run would be brought home on a wild pitch.

Hull pitched all 6.0 innings, allowing only a single hit. The sophomore also fanned half (11) of the batters she faced.

Softball returns to action on Wednesday as the squad opens up its conference play with a doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m.
