VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Two players from the Virginia Wesleyan University softball team have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)/Louisville Slugger weekly honor roll for the week ending on March 4, 2018. Amy Large has been named the National Player of the Week while Hanna Hull has been named the National Pitcher of the Week. This is coming on the heels of both being selected as Players of Week in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
Both players were instrumental in the squad's 6-0 run at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic Tournament in Arizona over the weekend. They helped the Marlins finish as the only unbeaten team after three days of play (out of 32 teams).
Large was on fire from the plate as the senior notched at least one hit in all six games, recording eight in total. In the first win of the week over William Paterson University, she slugged two home runs and brought in six RBI. She later added another homerun against #13 East Texas Baptist University and a triple against the University of Rochester to complete her week with a .444 batting average. The Kennett Square, Pa. native finished the week with a team-high 15 RBI. In the field she also went a perfect 3-for-3 on putouts in the outfield. To conclude the trip out west, Large was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Hull had another exceptional week tossing from the circle for the Marlins. The sophomore took to the rubber against #17 Moravian College, tossing a 10 strikeouts through a complete-eight inning game to earn her first win of the trip. She then threw 4.0 innings against ETBU, K'ing five en-route to another win. Hull made her record 3-0 in the weekend's final tilt against #9 Texas Lutheran as she tossed another complete game, fanning nine batters in the process. In all the Chesterfield, Va. native threw 27 strikeouts over 21.0 innings, while amassing an Earned-Runs Average of just 1.09. This has been the second-straight week Hull has been named the National Pitcher of the Week and has also been the third-consecutive week she has been named the ODAC Pitcher of the Week.
These two will join the rest of the squad on Sunday as the team hosts Christopher Newport University for another nationally-ranked matchup.
