RALEIGH, N.C. - The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team captured another two wins on Sunday, keeping its record clean at 8-0. The squad downed Piedmont College, 7-1, in game one before defeating Averett College, 2-1, in game two.
GAME 1: VWU - 7 PIEDMONT - 1
The squad took full advantage of some Lion errors throughout the game.After both teams went scoreless through the first two innings, VWU broke the tie with a three-run top of the third. Katelyn Biando led off with a single and was moved to second as Beth Ford reached on an error. Runners would stay on first and second as Madison Glaubke reached on a fielder's choice and then both would score as Cassetty Howerin doubled to left field. Teresa Cardamone would then plate Howerin with as she got made it to first on another error.
The Marlins would tack on four more in the final frame which began with Ford being put on first by an error. Kiersten Richardson then singled to put two on. Glaubke then singled (but then tagged out going to second) which put Richardson on third and scored Ford. Howerin would walk on the next at-bat and with runners on the corner, an error on Cardamone's plate appearance would score both. The final run of the inning came as Amy Large flew out to centerfield which scored Cardamone from third.
Alana Peters pitched the entire game for the Marlins, striking out five en-route to her first win of the 2018 season.
GAME 2: VWU - 2 Averett - 1
Both Marlin runs came on a pair of home runs during the second inning in this one. Jessica Lindsey recorded the first one as she led off with a jack over the right field fence. In the next at-bat, Julia Fassl cranked one over the left field fence to double up the score.
Hanna Hull hurled all 7.0 innings from the circle, striking out 14 and improving her record to 4-0 on the year.
Softball returns to action on Friday as the team heads to Arizona for the NFCA Classic Tournament. There, the team will play six games in four days, beginning with a tilt against William Paterson.
