No. 11 Softball Secures Road Sweep over Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan College softball team scored 16 runs in a pair of games Thursday to sweep The University of Mary Washington in non-conference action.
Game 1: 6-2 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
The Marlins used small ball to take the early lead on the Eagles as the first five Virginia Wesleyan runs scored via groundouts or sacrifice flies. Cassetty Howerin had two RBI groundouts in the first five innings while Blake Henderson had two sacrifice flies immediately following the Howerin plays.
Virginia Wesleyan led 5-0 in the top of the sixth when the first run crossed the plate via base hit as LeAnn Adkins entered the contest as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded and two outs. Adkins singled to right field, plating Taylor Galvin while adding even more cushion to the Marlin lead.
Mary Washington scored two in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Emily Briggs and an RBI single from Emma Rakowski, but Mary Shipp got out of the jam with no further damage.
Shipp (7-3) pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Game 2: 10-1 Virginia Wesleyan Victory (5 innings)
Virginia Wesleyan pulled away early in the nightcap on Thursday, scoring two runs in the first, three in the second, and three more in the third to take an 8-1 edge into the fourth frame. Virginia Wesleyan scored a lone run in the fourth and fifth to close out the game having scored in each inning.
Mary Washington looked to get out of the first inning with a zero on the Marlin run column as VWC managed a runner on second with two outs. A passed ball and a single by Henderson scored Kayla Dost for the lead. Henderson stole second to get into scoring position, racing home on a single by Galvin.
The Marlins wreaked havoc on the base paths in the top of the second, stealing five bases in the inning while scoring three runs. Henderson swiped three bases in the inning while Bogan stole the other two.
The inning started with a Liz Bailey walk, followed by an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt. Another Henderson steal put both runners in scoring position where Beth Ford brought Bailey home on a groundout. Richardson swiped third during Bogan's at bat, scoring on her single to left. Bogan extended her lead in steals by taking second and third, scoring on a Howerin single to right for the 5-0 lead after two.
Mary Washington, having made several defensive subs before the third inning, looked to stop the Marlins from scoring, collecting a pair of outs with no runs in despite VWC loading the bases. Howerin would not let the Eagles have that chance, doubling to right to clear the bases as VWC went up 8-0.
Howerin went 3-for-4 in the game with five RBI as Bogan went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.
Kandis Kresinske (5-1) picked up the win for the Marlins with just one unearned run on one hit in three innings while striking out two.
No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan (13-4/0-0) travels to Shenandoah University (6-8/0-0) Saturday for an ODAC-opening doubleheader set to start at 1 p.m.
