Howerin Homers Twice as No. 14 Marlins Sweep Home-Opening Doubleheader
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The No. 14 Virginia Wesleyan College softball team swept a doubleheader from N.C. Wesleyan College by scores of 4-2 and 8-0 Monday afternoon in non-conference action.
Game 1: 4-2 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
Mary Shipp (2-0) continued her strong play with her second complete game in as many tries. She allowed two early runs, but that would be it as she struck out five five and did not walk a batter in the contest.
The Marlins would get all the offense they needed in the third, trailing 2-1. Courtney Bogan led off the frame with an infield single, just beating the throw to first. The throw from third sailed high, allowing Bogan to advance to second where she swiped third in the next at bat. Kayla Malkos walked, putting runners on the corners for Cassetty Howerin. The sophomore first baseman sent a line shot deep over the left field wall for a three-run homer and a 4-2 Marlin lead.
Howerin and Bogan each had a pair of hits in the first game as Bogan also scored a pair of runs and stole three bases.
Game 2: 8-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
The Marlins scored six runs in the last two innings to run-rule the Battling Bishops in five innings.
Kandis Kresinske (1-1) had the best game of her young career against N.C. Wesleyan, allowing just two hits and two walks in five innings while striking out seven.
Kresinske did not allow a hit until the fourth inning when Brittany Manning led off with a double, before a single and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. The rookie hurler got out of trouble, enducing a foul out and a strikeout before Taylor Galvin picked off Abigail Arnold at first to end the frame.
Virginia Wesleyan got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Howerin doubled home Malkos. Kayla Dost tacked on another run in the frame when she lined a single to left to plate Howerin.
A five-run fourth inning put the game out of reach for the Battling Bishops. Galvin led off with a single, moving to third on a single off the bat of Blake Henderson. Liz Bailey sailed a sacrifice fly to center field to score Galvin, making the score 3-0. Following a fielder's choice and a walk, Beth Ford and Bogan stole third and second respectively. Malkos came through in the clutch again with a two-RBI double, plating the two Marlin speedsters. Howerin capped off the spurt with a long shot deep over the right field wall that scored Malkos.
Howerin and Malkos had two hits each as Ford scored a run and stole a pair of bases.
No. 14 Virginia Wesleyan (3-1) hosts Averett University (2-1) Saturday in a doubleheader scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
