The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team wrapped up their regular season Tuesday afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center taking on perennial ODAC power Washington and Lee University. The Marlins came into the match at 14-8 while the Generals came in at 10-6.
In doubles action, the Marlins #1 team of Nick Gunther and Mitch Perry battled hard but fell 8-4 to W&L's Bobby Neuner and Mitchell Thomas. At 2, VWU's Timothy Tep and Anthony Wilson dropped an 8-3 decision to Harry Shepherd and Noah Tapp. The tightest doubles match of the day came at #3 where the Marlin team of Paul Gladstone and Michael Portera fell to Ty Loan and John Rudden 8-6 after trading multiple breaks of service.
In singles, Virginia Wesleyan was able to gain traction in 4 of the 6 spots. At #1, Marlin senior Paul Gladstone fell 6-2, 6-4 to Harry Shepherd, who was an NCAA qualifier last season. At 5 singles, VWU sophomore Mitchell Perry dropped a closely contested 6-4, 6-2 decision to W&L's Noah Tapp while at 6 Michael Portera battled but came up short in a 6-3, 6-3 loss to W&L's John Rudden.
The match of the day came at #2 where Marlin freshman Timothy Tep took on Generals freshman Alex Fedor. In the first set Fedor earned a late set service break then held on to take the set 6-4. In the 2nd set Tep regained control and held on to take the set 6-4. With the match already decided they played a match tiebreaker for the 3rd set. Tep's steady play put him up early and he went on to take the tiebreaker 10-3. With the win the standout Marlin freshman improved to 16-3 on the season in singles.
Virginia Wesleyan concluded their regular season with a 14-9 record and will be the #3 seed in next week's ODAC tournament. They will host the #6 seed on Tuesday at the Everett Tennis Center. The semifinal and finals will be played on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University next Saturday and Sunday.
