Hilton Head, SC - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team earned a hard fought 5-4 decision against the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse on Tuesday morning at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
The Eagles came out strong by taking one and two doubles, both 8-4. At #3 doubles, Marlins senior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) and sophomore Mike Portera (Raleigh, NC) claimed #3 doubles 8-2, giving the Marlins life heading into singles.
Playing on four courts, the Marlins took two of the four opening sets. The Eagles went on to take #2 and #4 singles in straight sets putting them up 4-1. With UW-Lacrosse on the brink of taking the match the Marlin's started their comeback when Gladstone pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win at #1 singles, cutting into the Eagles lead. Earning the 3rd Marlins point, junior Andreas Combos (Cary, NC), fought off two set points in the 2nd set to go ahead and take #3 singles 6-3, 7-5. With the Marlins down 4-3 they needed to take both #5 and #6 singles. Knotting up the the match at 4-4 was Marlin sophomore Mike Portera, taking #6 singles 7-5, 6-4. With the match tied at 4-4, sophomore Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) came from a set down to defeat Eagle sophomore Sam Diedrich 2-6, 6-2, 10-6.
With the win the Marlins improved to 6-4 while the Eagles fell to 5-6. Next up for the Marlins is a doubler header on Wednesday. First up for the Marlins will be a 9 AM match against Division I Lafayette College followed by a 3:30 PM match against the University of Texas at Dallas. Both matches will take place at Chaplin Park on Hilton Head, SC.
