VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The eighth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team took down #9 Randolph-Macon in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship Friday evening on Birdsong field. With the win, the Marlins improve to 5-11-1 on the season and earn themselves a battle with top-seeded Washington and Lee at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
After the Yellow Jackets took an early lead in the first ten minutes, the Marlins were able to knot it back up. The play began with a ball sent into the six-yard box where it landed at Tyler Pratt's foot. The first-year Marlin then tapped it over to Ricky Perrault who tucked home the goal. The score would remain 1-1 going into half.
In the second, it was the Marlins who would strike first. Matt Campbell sent a long ball from near midfield that would soar into the box. A Yellow Jacket defender would misplay it and let the ball skip off his head into the back of his own net, giving the Marlins their first lead. The lead wouldn't last long though as just 44 seconds after the own goal, R-MC tied it back up.
Time zoomed along and neither team could get past the other team's keeper, that is until the 74th minute. Shaun Brooks got the play started looping a ball right near the penalty kick stripe. The Yellow Jacket goalie would come out to grab it but Perrault was quicker, nudging the ball with his head before the goalie collided with him. The ball would then roll across the goaline to give the Marlins the advantage. Randolph-Macon pressed hard over the last few minutes, but sturdy defense nullified any chances.
Griffin Potter got the win in net, stopping five Yellow Jacket attempts.
