HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team picked up a big win in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener as it took down Hampden-Sydney, 1-0, on the road Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Marlins go to 1-5 on the year but, more importantly, 1-0 in the conference. The Tigers go to 2-3-1 on the season (0-1-0 ODAC).
It took almost no time for the Marlins to get on the board as they applied some quick pressure to earn a corner in the eighth minute. Evan Kastetter lined up to take it sending a ball into the box that found Austin McKenzie's head. His header went into a defenders chest and rolled to Andrew Freeman who slotted it into the back of the net. VWU didn't let off the gas throughout the rest of the half, outshooting their foe 7-1. Solid defense in the second stanza kept the Tigers off the board and the single goal was the difference maker in a crucial win for the Marlins.
Freshman keeper Griffin Potter earned his first collegiate win between the pipes as he turned aside all three Hampden-Sydney shots on target.
Men's soccer will continue with its ODAC action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the team travels to Lexington, Va. to take on Washington and Lee.
