Marlins take control early in road win at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) champion Virginia Wesleyan College wasted little time in setting the tone for the first half of Saturday's league contest at Shenandoah University.

The Marlins, who posted a 3-1 win, took control just 3:14 into competition when senior Chris Cooke (Hampton/Phoebus) scored unassisted. Shortly after celebrating the score the Marlins had the opportunity to do it again as junior Josh Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Addison Trinity Christian)scored at the 6:35 mark, assisted by Robert Holschuh (Eagle, Wis./Milwaukee Pius XI).

Virginia Wesleyan, which outshot Shenandoh 7-3 in the half, made a 3-0 lead in the 17th minute when Cooke scored again on his second unassisted strike of the contest.

The victory kept VWC among the league leaders with a 4-1-1 ODAC record and a 7-3-2 record overall. Shenandoah falls to 4-9 overall and to 1-5 in the league. The Hornets averted the shutout in the 89th minute when Ian Alonso (Virginia Beach/Kempsville) scored on an unassisted goal.
