GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A four-game winning streak came to an end for the Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team on Saturday as the Marlins dropped a 2-1 decision to the host Quakers of Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition.

Guilford (4-6, 3-1 ODAC) managed only three first-half shots against the Marlins (5-3-1, 2-1) but let one of them get through off the foot of Christian Torres (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) in the 43rd minute. Omar Solis (Statesville, N.C./South Iredell) crosse the ball from the right for Torres' shot at close range.

Virginia Wesleyan upped the offensive intensity in the second half en route to outshooting the Quakers 7-3 in the half, but saw Guilford find an opening again. Jonny Goffredi (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt) scored in the 69th minute, putting in a header off a cross from Jake Esley (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase).

VWC did not let up however, and cut into the 2-0 deficit in the 78th minute when senior Isaac Arrington (DeSoto, Texas/Midlothian, Texas) scored near the far post off a cross from Alex Castelli (Purcellville/Loudoun Valley)Chris Cooke (Hampton/Phoebus), Castelli, and Arrington all produced shots in the final 12 minutes, but could not find the equalizing score.  Arrington's came in the final seconds, but Guilford goalie Marko Mandalinic (Lukavac, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Forsyth Country Day) stepped in front of it as time expired.

Virginia Wesleyan finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Marlins will attempt to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Oct. 4, in the Homecoming/Parents Weekend contest that begins at 3 p.m. VWC will host the league-leading Roanoke College Maroons (6-2-1, 3-0).
