LEXINGTON, Va -- Senior Isaac Arrington gave Virginia Wesleyan College's men's soccer team the lead Saturday at Washington and Lee University and came back later to help the Marlins secure a thrilling 2-1 win.
Arrington (DeSoto, Texas/Midlothian, Texas) scored in the 18th minute in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game and came through with the assist on the game-winning goal by junior Josh Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Addison Trinity Christian Academy) in the 61st minute.
VWC's victory was the third in a row for the Marlins, who improved to 4-2-1 overall and to 2-0 in the league. It was also the third straight game for Arrington to spark the offensive output. He has scored three goals and three assists in the three contests and leads the team with 10 points.
Washington and Lee, which dropped to 0-2 in the ODAC and lost for the second consecutive outing after starting the season with four straight victories, tied the game in the 34th minute. Miles Bent (Lexington/Rockbridge County) scored off an assist from Sam Knapke (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Benet Academy).
That score was recorded between two close calls by the Marlins as a shot by junior Austin VonVille (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) hit the post in the 24th minute and another shot by sophomore Nick Dudek (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) was blocked in the 37th minute.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot the Generals 4-2 in the first half, but the Generals came through to post a 4-2 edge in the second half. VWC finished with a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks, including 4-3 in the second half.
Junior Connor Kirkham (Centreville/Chantilly Westfield) protected the goal for the Marlins and produced one save. Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) finished with one save for W&L.
Virginia Wesleyan will attempt to extend its streak on Tuesday, Sept. 23, when the Marlins host North Carolina Wesleyan College's Battling Bishops in a non-conference game starting at 7 p.m.
