BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College sophomore Robert Holschuh followed the ball and found himself in the right position at the right time Friday night.
He took a shot at the goal in the late minutes of th OT and saw it stopped by Southern Virginia University goalie Colin Flynn (Chesapeake/Great Bridge). But, the ball glanced off the goalie and back into the direction of Holschuh ( Eagle, Wis./Milwaukee Pius XI)who kicked again and put it into the net to end the non-conference contest in a 1-0 victory for VWC.
The goal, scored with 5:04 remaining to be played in overtime, ended a game of missed chances for the Marlins (1-1-1). Virginia Wesleyan dominated possession time and finished with an 18-6 advantage shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Flynn led the Knights' defensive effort with a consistent effort in goal where he produced 10 saves.
Southern Virginia (1-2) struggled to get much of anything going against VWC in the first half as the Marlins limited the Knights to just one shot. Junior goalie Connor Kirkham (Centreville/Chantilly Westfield)stepped up to make the save on the shot and recorded two more saves in the second half against five SVU scoring attempts.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Sunday, Sept. 7, in the annual Hampton Roads showdown with Christopher Newport University. The teams will collide beginning at 7 p.m. on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
