FERRUM, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team opened up its ODAC slate with a win as it downed Ferrum, 15-5, Saturday afternoon on the road. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference action. Ferrum slides to 0-6 on the season (0-1 ODAC).
In a defensive heavy first quarter, the Marlin were the first to strike as Greg Gaetano cashed in a Jason Thibeault pass at the 11:50 mark. The Panthers answered back with one just over a minute later, but a Joey Rayman goal on the penalty kill gave VWU the 2-1 advantage going into the second.
In quarter number two, Ferrum tied it up in the opening minute. Virginia Wesleyan did not fret, cashing in the game's next three goals and earning a healthy 5-2 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Marlins flaunted their man-up capability as they cashed in seven power play goals over the next 30 minutes. The team came into the third quarter and immediately netted three on the man-up. The two sides would exchange a few goals but at the end of the game, the Marlins piled in four more man-up goals to complete the 15-5 victory.
Rayman and Nathan Sheirburn both finished the day with four goals a piece. Gaetano, Cole Maguire and Brady Morrison would each collect a pair and Trevor Lalonde would snag one. Also aiding in the offense was Thibeault who ended with six helpers.
The Marlins also held the advantage at the faceoff 'X' as they came out victorious in 14 of the 22 taken. Sheirburn went 10-for-15 on his attempts while Dante Castillo went 4-for-6.
Men's lacrosse will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as the team hosts Susquehanna University on Birdsong Field.
