VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team fell, 22-14, to Alma College at home on Sunday. With the loss, the Marlins move to 2-3 while Alma goes to 1-3 on the season.
After the Scots put up the game's first three goals, VWU tied it back up going on a three goal-run themselves. Tyler Conn bookended a Nick Zepko goal evening the score at 3-3. Alma used a man up situation to regain the lead at the 6:04 mark and then scored once more at the 2:05 mark. Cole Maguire netted one late though to cut the deficit the three.
In the second quarter, Alma pulled away, scoring seven unanswered through the stanza's first 10 minutes. They would tack on three more compared to just two from the Marlins holding a 15-6 lead going into the half.
The third quarter saw the team's go back-and-forth, with the Scots not relinquishing any ground on the lead. VWU made a ibit of the push in the final period outscoring Alma six to three but it wasn't enough.
Chris McTague played the first 20:56 in goal for the Marlins, stopping eight shots. He would then be relieved by Cory Austin who stopped six shots in 26:09. The final 8:12 was served by Philip Venanzi, who recorded two saves.
Men's lacrosse will return to action on Saturday as it opens up its ODAC play with a home game against Guilford.
