Men's Lax Opens Season with 9-8 Loss to Widener
CHESTER, Pa. – Widener University rallied from two goals down at the start of the fourth quarter to defeat Virginia Wesleyan 9-8 in season-opening men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Widener started the scoring with four goals in the first quarter, two coming from Chris Drake while Paz Gismondi tallied a goal and two assists. The lone Marlins goal in the quarter came off the stick of Eddie Desiderio on a Matt Baldwin assist.
The Marlins started chipping away at the 4-1 deficit in the second, outscoring the Pride 3-1 in the frame. After Widener took a 5-1 lead, Virginia Wesleyan scored the next five goals, spanning the third quarter, to go up 6-5.
Shane Taylor tied it up at six for Widener with 7:34 to play in the third, but Couture scored again at 5:06 to put the Marlins up 7-6. Virginia Wesleyan took its largest lead of the game, 8-6, on a Baldwin score just five seconds before the horn sounded for the third quarter.
Widener scored all three goals in the fourth to claim the victory. Kevin Kerby and Gismondi scored the first two in the first 10 minutes of the final period to tie up the contest. Drake found Tyler Schulte with 3:02 remaining for the deciding goal.
Taylor finished with three goals for Widener (1-0) while Gismondi added four points (two goals, two assists).
Baldwin had two goals and an assist for VWC while Conn and Couture had two goals each. Metzger added three assists. Chris McTague made 10 saves in net for the Marlins as Dante Castillo scooped a team-high six ground balls.
Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) hosts Greensboro College Saturday, February 25 at 1 p.m.
