Scoring Spurt Sinks Marlins in ODAC Quarters

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The No. 5-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team faced off with No. 4 Lynchburg College for the second time in five days on Wednesday with similar results as the Hornets defeated VWC 20-10 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Quarterfinals.

The Hornets scored the first two goals of the game before Josh Currier posted an unassisted tally at 9:46 to cut the deficit in half.

Following a Colin McGuire score, Currier found the back of the cage again to make it 3-2 in favor of Lynchburg with 6:13 to go in the first.

Lynchburg broke away from there, scoring 14 of the game's next 16 goals to take a 17-4 lead into the fourth quarter. Aaron Murphy posted four goals and two assists in the LC spurt while Austin Stewart netted five goals.

John Roth and Brad Lill each scored for the Marlins during the Lynchburg run, while Ben Fletcher and Currier collected assists.

Virginia Wesleyan won 15-of-32 face-offs while scooping 28 ground balls. John Bennett won both of his face-off attempts as Sean Galloway made eight saves in net.

Chris Cornelius had three goals for Lynchburg (11-7) as Chris Hawley stopped nine shots.

Virginia Wesleyan concludes the season with a record of 10-7 and 4-5 in ODAC play.
