Marlins Hold On for 11-10 Victory in Birdsong Opener
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team scored three goals in the third quarter to extend its lead, holding on late in the fourth quarter for the 11-10 win over Widener University in non-conference action Saturday. It was the first game for the Marlins on Birdsong Field.
The Marlins started the scoring early in the first quarter when first-year attack Tyler Conn found a hole in the left side and sent a shot past the Widener net-minder.
The Pride responded with goals by Tyler Schulte and Tim Taylor to take the 2-1 lead, Widener's lone lead of the game. That is when Conn made an impact yet again, finding John Roth for a 2-2 score heading into the second period.
Back-to-back man-up goals by Roth and Josh Currier extended the Marlin edge to two goals. Schulte scored a pair in the second quarter, but a Conn goal was the difference in the Marlins taking a 5-4 lead into the locker room.
The Marlins came out of intermission and continued to attack, scoring the first three goals of the half on shots from Roth, Currier, and Trenton Gahm to go ahead 8-4 with 9:11 to play in the period. The Virginia Wesleyan defense held Widener down the majority of the quarter as the Pride managed just one goal, coming with 2:31 left in the quarter.
Widener cut the lead to one, 8-7, behind the first two goals of the fourth quarter, but a pair of Currier goals equalized additional tallies from Shulte and Brady Franks.
The Marlins looked like they could sail to an opening victory in front of a large crowd as Currier found Justin Metzger for an 11-8 lead with just 4:50 to play.
Widener responded with a Taylor goal with 3:16 to play, but the Marlins had the clock on their side as the hosts ran more and more time with each possession. Chris Sanchez scored for Widener with four seconds left to cut the lead to one, but the time ran out on the ensuing face-off.
Schulte had four goals for Widener (0-1) as Taylor added three and scooped four ground balls.
Currier led the Marlins with four goals and an assist as Roth contributed three goals and an assist while Conn tallied two goals and an assist. Sean Galloway saved 21 shots for the victory.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-0) travels to Greensboro College for a 1 p.m. non-conference match, Saturday, February 27.
