VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season as the team fell, 61-54, to Averett University at home on Saturday. With the loss, the Marlins move to 3-1 on the season while the Cougars move to 3-2.
Corey Pelham got things going as he opened with a 3-pointer and the Marlins quickly went up 5-0 as Tim Fisher hit a lay up. The Cougars knotted things up 10-10 six minutes in and the two sides began to exchange buckets over the next five minutes. The Marlins went on a bit of run, pushing their lead to a game-largest eight but by the halftime buzzer the deficit was cut to four as they went into the locker room up 31-27.
In the second, the home side was able to maintain their narrow lead through the first eight minutes but the tides began to shift as the Cougars came up with a couple of defensive stops. Averett would take the lead at the 11:56 mark and hold it for the remainder of the game. The Marlins got within five as Fisher hit a 3-pointer with just a minute left, but the Cougars would hold on to serve VWU its first loss of the 2019-20 season.
Tyree Golston led the squad with 17 points and would add on a team-high four dimes to help the offense. Pelham would chip in 10 as well.
On the glass, Fisher was able to collect eight boards despite limited playing time due to foul trouble. Aiding the effort was Percy Burt who came away with seven rebounds.
Men's basketball will now hit the road for the first time of the year as they take on Salisbury University on Tuesday. Tip off for that contest will be at 7 p.m.
