LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team hopped back into the win column as it took down Randolph, 81-69, Saturday afternoon on the road. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 6-8 on the season and 4-1 in conference action. Randolph slides to 6-8 on the year (1-4 ODAC).
It was the Wildcats who went ahead first, going up as much as 10 points in the first, but the Marlins remained poised. With just under 10 minutes in the first, the Marlins would go on a 25-7 run to not only gain the lead but take put Randolph in an eight-point hole going into the half.
The momentum rolled into the second half as everytime the Wildcats attempted a comeback, the Marlins combatted it with a small point streak of their own. The result led to VWU's forth conference victory keeping them in second in the ODAC standings.
Offense came from all angles across the Marlin squad as five players finished the day in double-digit scoring. Lamont Steward led the squad with 17 while Corey Pelham finished with 15 going 50% (5-10) from the field. Also pitching in on the day were R.J. Nicholson (13), Keijon Honore (11) and Tyree Golston (10). Secondary scoring helped out as well as VWU's bench outscored Randolph's 25-16.
Underneath the hoop, Percy Burt hauled in nine boards to go along with his seven points.
Men's basketball will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team hosts Bridgewater in the Jane P. Batten Center.
