VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team defeated Eastern Mennonite, 2-0, Thursday evening on Birdsong Field. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 5-10 on the season while moving to 2-3 in conference action. EMU goes to 5-10 on the year as well (2-3 ODAC).
After a scoreless first quarter, the Marlins broke onto the scoresheet with a set piece goal. Emma Walsh took the penalty corner, distributing a ball to the top of the arc. Julie Fassl received the pass, and ripped a shot that beat the keeper, hit a defender's stick and flipped over it, finding its way into the back of the goal.
Just three minutes until the half, the Marlins were able to double up their lead courtest of Fassl once again. Elizabeth Roberto got the play going as she sent a pass to her teammate in the middle of the arc. Fassl then spun around, sending a ball into the net making it 2-0. That score would hold until the final horn.
Maura Bridges was credited with the shut out, notching her first complete one of the year.
Field hockey returns to action again with a 5 p.m. contest on Saturday against Shenandoah on the road.
