Emory & Henry springs Senior Day Upset on Marlins
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Emory & Henry College baseball team sprung a pair of upsets on the Marlins Saturday, winning games 6-4 and 9-8. Virginia Wesleyan recognized Justin Erby, Taylor Erby, C.J. Lindsay, Austin Gammon, Pat Barrett, and Riley Koonce in a ceremony between games.
Game 1: 6-4 Emory & Henry Victory
Emory & Henry got on the board first when Eli Straw blasted a double off the wall in center field to score Kodi McIlwraith in the top of the first.
Corey King doubled with one out in the bottom of the fourth to start a rally in the fourth inning. Following a Randy Neisz walk, Deon Hammond singled up the middle to score King to even the score at one.
McIlwraith and Straw got to the Marlins again in the top of the sixth when the pair singled to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt moved the duo into scoring position for Corbin Hockensmith, who singled home McIlwraith. Carson Bryant executed a good squeeze bunt to score Straw from third for a 3-1 lead.
Emory & Henry led 4-1 in the top of the eighth when the Marlins attempted a late rally. Justin Erby walked and Neisz singled to start the frame. Hammond grounded out to third to move the pair up. Taylor Erby lofted a fly ball to center, scoring his brother, Justin, from third. Jimmy Ziemke followed with a single to right that plated Neisz to make it 4-3. Lindsay doubled to right, chasing Ziemke around from first to even the score.
Josh Macek led off the ninth with a triple down the right-field line, getting the ninth jumpstarted for the Wasps. McIlwraith continued to hit, single Macek home on a bunt to score the game-winning run.
McIlwraith had three hits with two runs scored while Macek added three hits to go with two hits and two runs scored by Straw.
Kussmaul and Hammond had two hits each in the first game. Patrick Monteverde (5-2) strike out five while surrendering three runs in 6.1 innings.
Game 2: 9-8 Emory & Henry Victory
Emory & Henry jumped on the Marlins early in game two when Straw doubled home Daulton Horne in the first. Logan Forster singled up the middle to score Straw for a 2-0 lead.
The Marlins evened the score in the third with an RBI double by King, followed by an RBI single by Justin Erby.
Emory & Henry exploded for seven combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to jump ahead 9-2. The Wasps posted just five hits in those innings, taking advantage of two errors and three walks to do their damage.
Taylor Erby singled home Hammond in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to six.
The Marlins scored two more in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to just 9-6. King doubled home Kussmaul for the first run. Justin Erby tripled to left to score King, but was thrown out on a good play while trying to stretch it into an inside-the-park home run.
Virginia Wesleyan provided a final charge in the bottom of the ninth, trying to capture a win on Senior Day. Lindsay and Kussmaul walked to lead off the inning, moving up on a wild pitch. Following two quick outs, another wild pitch plated Lindsay to make it 9-7. Neisz singled, moving up to third on an error, while Kussmaul raced home to cut the lead to one. Emory & Henry reliever, Nick Lesnak, induced a ground out to preserve his first save.
Straw, Forster, Lukas Hart, and Ross French had two hits each while Horne scored three runs.
Kussmaul went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while King and Justin Erby had two hits each.
Virginia Wesleyan (18-17/9-8) hosts Hampden-Sydney (20-15/9-8) for an ODAC contest Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. It will be the regular season home finale for the Marlins.
