NEW ORLEANS, La. - Both the Virginia Wesleyan University men’s and women’s cross country teams were named NCAA Division III All-Academic Teams by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their 2017 seasons.
The men’s side accumulated a team Grade-Point Average of 3.24, while the women finished with a combined GPA of 3.10. Emily Latimer was also recognized as an Individual All-Academic winner as she posted a GPA higher than 3.30 and finished in the top-25 percent of the South/Southeast Regional Championship meet.
On the season, both sides found plenty of success, with senior Marissa Coombs coming away with a phenomenal season. Coombs took first place at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships with a time of 22:01.24. Later named the Conference’s Runner of the Year, Coombs made it all the way to the NCAA Division III Championships where she placed 130th out of 279 runners.
For the men’s team, Jordan Sulcer was the top performer, clocking the 10th fastest 8k in school history (26.14). Sulcer was the top runner at the Conference Championship as well, finishing 26th with a time of 26:45.66.
