Volleyball Splits Final Two Conference Matches

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team split its tri-match Saturday afternoon on the campus of Washington and Lee. The squad downed Hollins 3-1 before dropping a 3-0 match to the host Generals. With the results, the Marlins are now 14-8 on the season and will finish with a conference record of 9-3.

MATCH 1: VWU – 3 HOLLINS – 1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-14, 25-15)

The first two sets were played rather tight with it going to a few points at the very ending splitting them between the two sides. The Marlins then caught some fire in the final two sets, keeping Hollins to under a .030 hitting percentage in each set.

Three players finished the match with double-digit kills including Doneisha Hall who had 18 and a kill percentage of .469. Also pitching in were Kristina Soctt and Amber Matalus who each came aaway with 10.

Meghan Wood took the brunt of the setting duties during the match, registering 36 over the four sets. Katie Costin also chipped in with 19.

In the back row, a multitude of different Marlins dealt out solid performances with Alyssa Taylor picking up a team-high 16 digs. Hall would register 11 to give her a double-double.

 

MATCH 2: W&L – 3 VWU – 0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-18)

The Marlins struggled to get things going in this game, earning only its second straight-set loss of the season. Lauren Topper performed well from the right side, clocking eight kills but the team could only usher out a kill percentage of .164.

Sarah Brush had a decent outing in the back row, registering a team-high 13 digs to bring her two-match total to 21 on the day.

Katie Costin became the primary setter for the squad with 15 assists but Meghan Wood would also help out as she recorded 12.

Volleyball will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday as the team travels to North Carolina Wesleyan University for a non-conference bout.
