Volleyball Takes Two on Day Two of Virginia Wesleyan Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team came out victorious in both of its game Saturday afternoon, finishing the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament with a 3-1 record. The squad cruised past Penn State-Berks, 3-0, before earning another 3-0 shutout against St. Mary's College later in the day.

MATCH 1: VWU-3 PENN ST BERKS-0 (25-14, 25-7, 25-9)

The Marlins used a dominant effort to take down the Nittany Lions in the first game of Saturday morning. Most of the offense came from the service line as the team combined for 16 aces during the three set match. Seven different players recorded an ace led by Meghan Wood's career high six.

Wood didn't just do it on the service line though. The junior registered 20 assists to lead all players on the court.

Chipping in offensively was Kristina Scott with seven kills and Elizabeth Britton with 6. The Marlins were also error-less in the second set, achieving a kill percentage of .550 on 11-20.

MATCH 2: VWU-3 St. MARY'S-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-20)

The Marlins needed to stay tough in this match, including warding off three set points in game two. The attack was spread out with a trio of Marlins in Doneisha Hall (12), Scott (12) and Britton (10) all reaching double-digit kills.

Setting duties were split on the day with Wood accruing 23 and Katie Costin coming in with 14.

Wearing the opposite color libero jersey, Alyssa Taylor had a solid day in the back row, notching a team-high 13 digs and turning in two aces.

Volleyball doesn't have to wait long for its next contest as it will square off with the University of Mary Washington at 7 p.m. on Sept. 5.
