VWU Outlasts Royals in Marathon Match
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team rallied from down a set to defeat Eastern Mennonite University in five sets in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Wednesday. The Marlins captured the match by a score of 23-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-18, 17-15.
The Marlins trailed 18-10 in the first set, but battled back point by point to narrow the deficit to 23-21. An attack error brought the Marlins within a point where an EMU ball-handling error allowed the visitors to tie the set. EMU ended the Marlin spurt with a kill by Ginny Sorrell, winning the set on the next point due to an error.
Virginia Wesleyan rolled through the second set behind 14 kills on a .367 hitting percentage. VWU led just 11-8, but finished on a 14-5 run to claim the set victory. The Marlins finished the set with four-straight kills, two from Dare Wright and one each from Kristina Scott and Doneisha Hall.
After dropping the third set, the Marlins needed to win the fourth to have a chance at the match victory. VWU led 18-16 in the fourth before a six-point run put the guests up 22-16. EMU scored the next two points to cut it to 22-18, but the Marlins won the following three on two kills from Hall and one from Lauren Topper to even the sets at two-all.
The fifth set went back and forth with neither team able to take more than a one point lead until late in the game. An Allison Mackley service ace put the Marlins up 13-11, but an attack error produced a side-out for EMU while cutting the score to 13-12.
An Elizabeth Britton kill set up match point for the Marlins, but EMU rallied on a kill by Janna Williams and a Marlin attack error to fend off two match points. A kill by Scott gave another match point opportunity to the Marlins, but EMU fended it off again.
Tied at 15-all, Britton put down a kill from Meghan Wood to set up the Marlins' fourth match point. Wood dished out another assist, this time to Topper, to secure the Marlin victory.
Williams finished with 10 kills for Eastern Mennonite (5-12/2-5) while Jasmine Johnson dished out 22 assists to go with 36 digs from Skyler Johnson.
