No. 25 CNU Defeats Marlins in Three Sets

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team traveled to No. 25 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday, falling in a tough regional contest 25-22, 25-19, 25-18.

The Captains, winners of five of their last six matches, proved to be a tough opponent and served as the first nationally-ranked team to challenge Virginia Wesleyan this season.

CNU jumped out to an early 14-4 lead in the first set before the Marlins were able to halt the scoring, siding out on a Captain service error. That point started a 7-0 run for Virginia Wesleyan to cut the deficit to 14-11. Dare Wright and Lauren Topper had two kills each in the scoring spurt.

The Marlins took advantage of that run, keeping the score within four points the remainder of the set. Trailing 22-20, VWU used a service error and Doneisha Hall kill to even the score at 22 and force CNU to take a timeout. The Captains recovered, scoring the next three points to take the first-set victory.

Virginia Wesleyan led 8-7 in the second set, but a 12-3 CNU run put the hosts ahead for good. CNU took advantage of a similar scoring run in the third set to seal the victory. The Marlins trailed by just two, 9-7, before an 11-3 outburst put the Captains in front 20-10.

Abby Oren and Katie Crofford led No. 24 Christopher Newport (13-3) with eight kills as Tylar McGill and Ashley Burgess posted 15 assists each.

Wright led the Marlins with nine kills. Meghan Wood dished out 16 assists as Allison Mackley registered 24 digs.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-6/3-1) hosts Shenandoah University (5-9/0-4) Saturday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match Saturday at noon.
